Sea Turtle Nursery

In Rigo´s family beach house in Salinas Grandes we have built a sea turtle nursery to help protect the sea turtle eggs that are being poached at a high rate in the whole country. We have been able to do this in cooperation with the local community, and especially because of a woman named Lucia, who is very engaged in environmental and social projects in Salinas Grandes.

What we do is that we collect the sea turtle eggs right after they have been laid and we "plant" them i the nursery, where they are safe and protected from poachers. After 45-60 day they hatch and we help release them to make sure they make it safely to the ocean. Sea turtles have a lot of natural enemies, apart from human beings, and the least we can do is make sure they make it to the ocean - where they will later meet other challenges and enemies. The statistics say that only 1 out of a 1000 born sea turtles make it to the age of 10 years, which is when they start reproducing. The beautiful thing about sea turtles is that if they make it to the age of reproducing, they come back to more or less the exact same spot where they where born. So one day, maybe, one of the baby sea turtle we helped release will come back and lay her own eggs here.

This season, so far, we have released around 1000 baby sea turtles, and we have more eggs that haven´t hatched yet. This is the first year we have done this in Salinas Grandes, and we hope to increase the space and the number of sea turtles eggs next year.
